Thinking about tying some of these puppies up this week. They're a really simple tie and make for a very effective imitation of a sow bug which works quite well on the river Blue at times.
Here's what you'll need to tie this fly.
Hook: Nymph or Scud hook 2X sizes range from 8 to 20.
Thread: Red, olive, light grey, optional.
Shellback: Pearl tinsel or latex strip.
Body: Ostrich herl in the colors of light gray, olive, or cream.
Here's how you do it.
Start thread and make full hook shank wrap ending slightly behind the hook barb. Tie in strand of tinsel. Mount 1-3 ostrich herl fibers by their tips. Advance thread to hook eye. Wrap the herl forward with tight wraps and secure with thread wraps. Pull tinsel over and secure with thread wraps. Whip finish, glue, and go fish.
