Focus On Nutrition - A Summer Favorite

We slice them, quarter them, sometimes plug them, hold festivals in their honor and even write songs about them.  As a matter of fact Tom T. Hall, in one of his songs, tells us if we make wine with these it goes good with old dogs and children.

Although the watermelon originated in South Africa, it is today grown widely across much of the United States.  Here in Oklahoma we have some of the better watermelons grown in America and towns like Rush Springs, Terrell, and Ryan Oklahoma have become magnets to the watermelon loving ranks.
Watermelons are high in lycopene and lycopene is important for our cardiovascular health.  Watermelon is also a good source of citrulline, an amino acid, which is converted into arginine.  Both of these amino acids help produce nitric oxide, which can cause the blood vessels to dilate and lower blood pressure.
The watermelon is a good source of vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B5, vitamin A and these melons can aid us in keeping our bodies well hydrated.
This week in our Memorial Day weekend ad, watermelons are featured at $2.99 each, which is a fantastic price!
